This faith of ours

Jason Nelson

This faith of ours is a warm hug from Jesus. It is a gift of his Holy Spirit that enables us to embrace God for ourselves. We can say, “I have faith” because he gave it to us in a way that allows us to possess it. I don’t remember a time I didn’t have mine. I do know that over the course of my life it has ebbed and flowed. It has been strong and weak. It has been an active and passive force in my life. I have studied the Bible and gone to church to maintain it and build it up. But it has always been there, and I really don’t know how to live without it.

S. Lewis said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” He lost his faith in adolescence and then found it again later in life. He cherished his faith because he tried life without it and then saw everything in life was better with it. He distinguished himself defending this faith of ours.

The psalms consistently attach suffixes like ful and fulness to the word faith because faith isn’t static. It is a dynamic force that determines our ability to love God and love others in a trustworthy way. Inner faith makes us outwardly faithful. “Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other” (Psalm 85:10). This faith of ours is everything.
