God’s true north
Pastor Daron Lindemann
How certain are you—right now—of direction? Try this: Can you point straight north? Go ahead and point. Now check your compass app on your phone to see how close you are.
Knowing your direction makes all the difference.
What happens if a ship sets its bearings from Galveston, Texas, to Miami, Florida, and in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, it storms during the night? Winds and waves push the ship’s direction slightly south by only a few degrees.
The ship will end up in Cuba.
If the captain is checking his compass regularly, however, he will be resisting the storm’s direction constantly and steering the ship in the right direction.
By design, compasses already navigate true north. You don’t have to design or discover true north. Just face that direction, trust it, check your compass regularly, make adjustments when circumstances try to alter your course even a few degrees, and keep going.
God’s truth, God’s character, and God’s promises are timelessly consistent. Like true north, he never changes.
“For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does” (Psalm 33:4).
Is your life heading where it should? Do you even know where that is?
God is your compass. Without your design or doing, he has established himself as your true north. Know him, and you know the way. Follow his faithfulness, and you will go in the right direction.
