How is your “walk” with God?
Pastor Mike Novotny
Have you ever heard Christians talk about their “walk” with God? The idea comes from passages like this: “We instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living” (1 Thessalonians 4:1). The original Greek of the verb that we translate “to live” is “to walk.”
But why would Paul choose the idea of walking to describe the Christian life? Here are two reasons—First, walking involves direction. Unless you’re walking in place (which looks weird!), you’re walking in some direction. It’s the same with Jesus. Your life can move toward him or away from him, but every day your soul is moving in some direction. Second, walking involves pace. You can walk quickly or slowly. You can slowly seek God, taking a step here or there when you have the time; or you can seek him with all your heart, running the race to win the prize.
So, how’s your walk? The comfort of Christianity is that Jesus makes us worthy even while we’re “walking.” As we try to fix our eyes on Jesus and pick up our spiritual pace, we know that we’re already loved, pleasing, and perfect in the eyes of our Father. Therefore, Christian, take a deep breath. Your soul is safe with Jesus.
Knowing that, let’s walk even straighter and even faster for our Lord and Savior!
