Faith is never alone

Faith alone saves. But for believers in Jesus, faith is never alone.

“Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:15-17).

Holding firm to the Bible’s teachings can become a wicked trap if we stop there and think that God loves us only because we have the truth. True truth is accompanied by love.

Do you know what an erg is? It is the term of measurement for a unit of mechanical work. For example, it takes a certain number of ergs for you to walk to the kitchen. The Bible calls us to exercise our faith into acts of love and uses the Greek word erg.

Love is work. You are redeemed, not by God’s good thoughts but by the loving work of Jesus Christ.

Love is work. A marriage relationship grows with work; it doesn’t just happen and it isn’t easy. Parenting is work (and having parents is work). Friendship is work. Going to church is work, and volunteering is work. School is work, and a career is work. Caring for people is work. Sometimes it’s hard work! That’s what faith does. It loves.

Christianity is nothing less than holding to the truth, but it is also so much more.
