Kindness, not judgment
Linda Buxa
“When you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?” (Romans 2:3,4).
He needs to watch his mouth. She should put more clothes on. I can’t believe they can’t get their act together! If they just went to church, things would work out for them.
Multiple times in my life, I have been guilty of thinking someone needs to change his or her external behavior to become a “better” person. Maybe you’re guilty of that too. I think it’s because judgment is easier than getting to know someone. The more people meet our standards, the better we can feel about ourselves.
Still, as I meet people each day who need Jesus (whether they know it yet or not), these words from Paul put me in my place. Who am I, a mere human, to spend more time judging the sins of others while completely discounting mine? I’m simply a beggar showing other beggars where to find bread. I show the love of Jesus sincerely and share the kindness of Jesus with patience. I talk to others with gentleness and respect. I tell them about the Savior who has changed my life.
Then I watch the Holy Spirit work. He’ll change hearts. And he’ll help them change behaviors. Not because God is angry. Because God is kind.
