Under his wings

Linda Buxa

“Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart” (Psalm 91:3,4).

In September 2017, Hurricane Irma began pummeling Florida with torrential rain and 107 mph winds. That’s when another Irma—a Muscovy Duck named after the storm—gained international fame. (She even got her own Facebook page.) While many animals sought shelter, Irma sat unmoving on her nest of 13 eggs. She endured the first round of storms, remained on the nest even through the calm of the eye of the hurricane, and then weathered the second round. The next morning she was alive and uninjured, covered in broken branches and Spanish moss, but with all her eggs intact. It took another 24 hours before she willingly stood up to walk a bit. She protected her nest because that’s what mama ducks do.

Because Jesus refused to abandon the cross and took the blows of God’s wrath, he protected you with his blood and made you a child of God. Thanks to him, you have a Father who will never abandon you. As you weather the storms of this life—temptation, hurt, loneliness, accidents, divorce, financial struggles—God refuses to leave you. He promises that whatever you are going through, he is your shelter, your peace, your protection. Even after the storms have passed, he stays with you to watch over you.

Because that’s what your Father does.
