Glorify God, blessed child

Pastor Mark Cares

So many people today are acting and talking like orphans. Some are scared, wondering what will happen to them. Others talk as if it is all up to them. Relatively few act as if they have nothing to worry about because someone is taking care of them.On the night he was betrayed Jesus told his disciples, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:18).

He had just reassured them that he would send them the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. But he didn’t stop there. He also said: “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” (John 14:20). And again:“If anyone loves me, he will obey my teachings. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:24).This is how close God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is to us and with us! He makes his home with us.

But is this how we always act or talk? Or do even we, sometimes, come off as orphans? Do you find yourself joining in when people express worry about their job or retirement funds? Do you get worked up about what the government is doing and give the impression that the future of our country rests in its hands? We have wonderful opportunities right now to glorify God by not acting like orphans.

Many of us have been at meetings where everybody is hot and bothered about something. Then someone speaks calmly and positively. Singlehandedly, their words change the whole tenor of the meeting. We can have the same effect. When we talk about God providing for us—and then act like it by being confident—we can minister to a lot of people. Some will be intrigued and will want to learn more. Then we can tell them how great our God is.

In these dark days, let your light shine brightly. Don’t act like an orphan. Rather live as the protected, blessed child of God. That’s who you are in Christ Jesus.
