More Powerful Than…
Dan Kunz
"Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!" "Look! Up in the sky!" "It's a bird!" "It's a plane!" "It's Superman!"
For years, this was the opening line of The Adventures of Superman television series. Even today, most people recognize Superman and his superpowers, X-ray vision, speed, strength, etc. Unfortunately, some of those same people don’t recognize the actual superhero present in the world today – God! The Bible relates many examples of the incredible miracles that Jesus performed while on this earth. Raising people from the dead, stilling a terrible storm, and feeding thousands of people with a little bread and fish are just a few of the amazing things he did.
Our family had the opportunity to see that power on full display this week.
For months, wildfires have ravaged the western United States, including Colorado, where our daughter and her family live. They own a piece of property in the mountains and are building a cabin there. The area contains a number of year-round homes, as well as vacation cabins. The area was threatened by a wildfire several weeks ago, but an early snowstorm reduced the threat. Unfortunately, the threat returned this week. The fire was so large and the winds so strong that a mandatory evacuation order was enacted on Wednesday.
If you’ve ever seen a wildfire, whether a grass fire or forest fire, it is a frightening force of nature. When stoked by high winds, it can burn up an evergreen tree or an entire field in a matter of seconds. Buildings can be reduced to ashes in a matter of minutes. People have no chance. Yet as powerful as a wildfire is, God’s power is greater. He can bring rain or snow. He can dampen the wind. He can turn the wind.
That’s exactly what happened in Colorado on Wednesday. With the fire bearing down on the valley where our family’s property lays and their neighbor’s home is located, God answered many prayers and the wind changed slightly. The fire swept by on each side, but they and their neighbor were spared.
A wildfire is powerful, but God is more powerful. Wildfires, the coronavirus, hurricanes, earthquakes, civil unrest, and cancer are not more powerful than our God. Jesus proved it while he was on earth and his Father continues to prove it today. What an amazing, comforting thought! The God who loves us enough to send his own Son into the world to pay for every single sin we have ever committed, is able to protect us from any and every threat that may come our way!
Psalm 28:7 “The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. Thank you, Lord, for answering many, many prayers. Your grace is more than sufficient for us!
